What is counselling and how can it help you? Counselling helps you to explore and express your feelings in a safe space and gives you the opportunity to speak to a professional who is impartial and non-judgemental to your personal issues. Sometimes speaking to a friend or family member is not a good option and having counselling gives the client the space to be themselves knowing that whatever is spoken about is confidential. The most common issues that are presented in the therapy room are: - • Bereavement – losing a loved one can be tough and bring a range of emotions to the surface. Anger and guilt are two of the emotions that often come up and speaking with a therapist can help the grieving process. • Addictions – a physical addiction is almost certainly linked to a mental addiction and counselling can help to understand and get to the root of the addiction. • Anxiety– finding out what triggers the anxiety and learning how to cope with an attack is key to managing this. • Bullying – this can lead to low self-worth and low self-esteem and counselling can help to address this and help the client to be able to rebuild their life. • Relationship issues – this could be husband and wife, family members, friendship, or a parent to child. Abusive relationships come under a big umbrella and understanding and becoming more self-aware is the first step in being able to tackle this issue. • Depression – feeling of hopelessness and helplessness, living in a big black hole and unable to function and live life. Counselling will give the client the understanding and opportunity to be able to look at things from a different perspective and help the client to slowly rebuild their life and be able to come through. Counselling will help you to help yourself and will give you the tools to be able to change yourself and give you a clearer insight to who you are and how you deal with situations and challenges along the way.
